Attendance

Registration and late arrival

The Academy is committed to encouraging pupils to attend school regularly. We will work with parents and pupils to secure this aim. If you require any support, please arrange a meeting to see our attendance team or Educational Welfare Office (EWO).

Registration in the mornings for all year groups is at 8:55am. Any child arriving more than 5 minutes after this time should come into the Academy via the main office, inform the office staff of their arrival and sign in, giving a reason for their lateness. It’s essential that your child arrives promptly at the Academy because the day starts off with the teacher explaining the day’s learning to the class. Any child arriving after 9:20am will be recorded as an unauthorised absence unless an acceptable reason is given.

Afternoon registration takes place at 1:20pm.  Children leaving the Academy other than at official times must be signed out at the main office.

  • Anyone arriving after 8:55am must bring their child to the office to sign in late. Children arriving late after 9.30am (after register closes) will receive an unauthorised absence for the morning.

  • Parents/carers MUST telephone 020 8668 4877 (option 1 on the answerphone) or email the school on byron@oasisbyron.org school before 9.20am on the first day their child is not attending school due to illness detailing symptons and each subsequent day thereafter (unless a time of absence can be given on first day of illness eg: chickenpox).

  • Failure to report illness before 9.20am on each day of illness results in unauthorised absence. 5 days unauthorised absence or more will be reported to the Education Attendance Service which could result in a fine.

  • Unauthorised absence may result in a fine and possible court proceedings.

  • A member of the attendance team will contact you if they have not received a reason to explain your child's absence.

  • If necessary, a home visit will be carried out in order to check on the welfare of the child.

  • If you require support with your child’s attendance, please contact the attendance team by calling the school office on 020 8668 4877

Medicines

If your child needs to take any form of medication,  parents will need to sign a medical administration form in the main office. Please see office staff to talk through any concerns.

Attendance

At Oasis Byron Academy we encourage pupils to strive for excellence. For a pupil to achieve their full academic potential, a high level of attendance is essential. Pupils should aim for a minimum of 97% attendance (or no more than 5 days of absence during an academic year).

Everyday counts at Oasis Academy Byron. We understand the correlation between high levels of attendance and pupil outcomes. Our Attendance Policy emphasises positive strategies & a range of interventions to promote excellent attendance.

At Oasis Academy Byron, attendance is monitored daily in line with expectations set out by the government- children with good attendance are more likely to meet the end of Key stage expectations in Reception, Year 2 and Year 6.

Nationally, most pupils miss around 6 days per year. If a child is missing more than that, they are disadvantaged as going to school less than most children will make it harder to do as well.

Our robust systems for monitoring and improving attendance give pupils the best possible chance of success both academically and socially.

We provide support for families through our Attendance team and Educational Welfare Office. Please speak with a member of the team if there are issues you would like to discuss that are impacting on your child’s regular attendance.
