Enterprise Education

At Oasis Academy Byron we believe that we have an important role to play in equipping children with the skills they will need to have successful futures. We place a high priority on developing enterprise in its widest sense. The Academy is currently working to embed enterprise into all year groups. Throughout 2019-20 the children will participate in several projects to develop enterprise skills at all levels and some classes will participate in visits to support this work, for example, Year 6 visit to Loreal.

Byron is very proud to have the only school bank in Croydon. This was established in conjunction with HSBC and staff come in each week to support Year 6 children in running the bank. Year 6 children apply for jobs in the bank and are interviewed, trained and supervised in their appointed roles. In July each child holding a job in the bank receives a written reference from the manager of the HSBC in central Croydon. Children from 7 years upwards can have bank accounts and we currently have over 80 children with accounts.

The academy also supports a range of charities during the year including Children in Need, Sports Relief, Red Nose Day, McMillan Coffee Morning and the local Royal Marsden Hospital. Children are encouraged to raise money and be inventive. As part of our link with our partner Oasis Zimbabwe, Year 6 raise money to support a family with education and basic needs. In 2013-14 the children raised money to enable a child called Blessing and his sister to attend school, have the uniform, the right equipment and also provided money to establish his mother in her own business so that income could become sustainable. This meant that the family no longer had to beg on the street for money. In 2014-15 Year 6 worked towards raising money to support the Oasis teacher training programme in Harare so that more children will be able to benefit from receiving an education. In 2015-16 money was raised to renovate a toilet and to buy farming equipment and in 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 the whole school raised money to support the Oasis Global Day.
